Re: Salmonella and baytril

Salmonella can exist in small amounts in the systems of a lot of animals - it's one of the reasons why it's a good idea to wash your hands after handling any pet, especially a small animal. Sometimes it's there and doesn't affect them, but sometimes the conditions are right to let it reproduce to a point that it starts to cause a problem. But, yes, it's very treatable, and a round of antibiotics should clear it up. I'd also suggest getting some probiotic (Benebac is the one I use) to add to her food for a few days after the antibiotics are done. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria but also the good bacteria that the body needs for a healthy digestive system, so you might notice that the poops are squishy for a little while after the antibiotics are finished. Adding a pinch of probiotic powder to the food daily will help clear that up faster.

Don't worry, salmonella isn't a permanent sickness, and will go away with antibiotics. Baytril is the normal antibiotic normally prescribed for hedgehogs and should get rid of the infection soon enough.

Salmonella and baytril

So i took one of my three babie hedges to the vet today because he has been having very mucusy green poop, and the vet told me he has salmonella, has anyone ever dealt with this? as a first time hedgie owner, buying a pregnant hedge and ending up with three babies as well this is super overwhelming. the vet also said he could have been born with Salmonella, is this permanent then?
