|Netsrik||Most newspapers aren’t ok for hedgehogs, due to the ink. Some paper should not be used because it will get wet and make the cage cold. I use this hamster/rabbit bedding called όber. It is dust free and is super cheap and safe for hedgehogs.|

|Emc||You can use pine pellets in a litter box if you want to; theyre light coloured too. Honestly, any light coloured substrate (be it white or something like wood shavings) are typically very easy to spot problems with (i.e bloody discharge, etc).|

|Kalandra||That is true of older newspapers, but there was a move away from that to mostly soy or water based inks. However, since this forum is international, caution should be mentioned since some countries may still allow for heavy metals (lead) or other toxic items to be in their ink.|

@Romain, have you considered putting down a piece of fleece material instead? It would be softer than newspaper, wicks the urine (keeping them from a wet floor), and can be washed and re-used. It also comes in all sorts of fun patterns so you can switch the fleece out as needed.
The photos show some fleece items I use in my cage.

|nikki||Newspaper isn't a good idea because when it becomes wet it gets very cold and can cause your hedgehog to become cold. It's ok to use in things like bird cages because they don't spend much time on the bottom of the cage and their droppings are drier than urine. Shredded paper can be very dusty.|
