Talking someone should do an aggressive tutorial

someone should do a tutorial on how to pick up a hedgehog by the scruff.

i was trying to figure out how in the 9 realms was i gonna clip Crowley's nails when she won't let me touch her feet, and she balls right up if i put her on her back .

just when all hope seemed lost i was watching random hedgehog care vids on YouTube when i came across one dealing with clipping an aggressive hedgehogs nails. Crowley isn't aggressive- just difficult, but i figure whats the harm in watching?

well, the person had just grabbed the hog by the scruff and tilted it on it's back so it couldn't curl up!
i tried it on Crowley and it worked !!!!!!! i got all the little claws clipped with very little fuss.

but it was terrifying cuz i couldn't find a tutorial for how to grab the scruff without hurting them so i was scared i'd hurt her, - she did it once on camera but didn't really explain how she did it.

i just played it by eye* i just kinda grabbed and flipped quickly and would let go if it looked like it might hurt her which made for a long process that neither of us enjoyed.

anyway- i think it would help a lot of people who either have aggressive hedgehogs or like me have trouble touching their feet to clip nails if their was a tutorial on this site for people

also i recommend using long handled nail clippers( maybe with a grip) - wet hedgehog + small clippers = unhappy hedgie and drooped clippers. especially if your doing it on your own instead of two people.

How do you get them to not flail their legs?

They get used to it. They still flail sometimes if they think it takes too long. I have one whom I don't even need to scruff anymore, I just turn him around and he keeps still until I'm done.

It takes time and practice. I couldn't even touch the quills of the one I was talking about when I got him let alone scruff him. We're talking about months of progress here.
I think it's good to learn them scruffing, if they're sick and you have to take them to the vet it's easier when you can scruff them.

I will review the videos again after work. Honestly I'm always looking for better ways to handle and care for the kids. And recently someone had mentioned the advantages of practiced scruffing. Maybe I'll practice on a boy tonight. Tiberius probably. If he is feeling easy going.

Yeah- the leg failings and the wet hedgehog part is why it was scary and tooj forever to get all her nails clipped. But by the 3 rd or 4 th time i had to regrab her she seemed to get wiith the program and would at least not move the foot i was working on.
