We've always had anxious bathers too and here's our method. This method is always with a partner but maybe you can use some of the ideas even if you can't replicate the whole thing. Use a tray with a very shallow amount of warm water, just enough to let the feet always soak. Put some shampoo(we use an oatmeal dog shampoo) in, splash it around until you can get at least a few suds going, then put your hog in. Here you'll need a cup for scooping up some water. One partner is always the "goalie." Hedgie keeps trying to climb out, goalie keeps putting them back in. The other partner uses the cup to scoop out water from the bottom of the tray and pour it on hedgie's back, or uses a toothbrush to clean problem spots, etc. After you're done, use the cup to rinse off(I say always use cups because faucets make noise and will probably make a stressful situation even worse) and then get them into a nice fluffy towel and just let them burrow into it. It'll help them stay warm and dry and it'll give them something to burrow in to feel safe and secure after a stressful situation.
