The bearing will be on the one crossbar we're keeping. It'll be against the cage so it isn't suppose to do any damage to him, right?

You could also get the Kaytee Comfort wheel from Chewy.com. I'm not sure about shipping but it's at least a solid-bottom wheel with an entirely open side.

Yea a lot if people dont like that wheel deem it as unsafe but cant remember why.
I think that as long as that one bar is on the plastic and he only gets off the side you've taken it off then it should be safe.
