Default New Nail Trimming Method!

After struggling to figure out a comfortable solution to the dreaded nail trimming process, I've found one that works like a dream! Here's the basic breakdown I follow:
Footbath complete, wrap little hedgie loosely in cloth/etc., set on counter with newly replenished food bowl or treat in front of him for a little after bath snack(I typically face Pokey away from me so that his feet are easy to access from the back). As he chows down, I use my left hand to gently pull out/up his left legs and cut with fingernails clippers in my right hand, looking down from over the top of his body. Repeat for right side. The right side typically involves a little turn of the hedgie/snack setup, but hopefully you get the idea!

I just did this for the fourth time and I've gotten it down to less than 2 minutes. Pokey rarely catches on to what's happening, and I'm not worried about trimming too much or hurting his little legs-I love it! If you have questions, or would like a picture(or three) of the process, just let me know.

Happy trimming!

I did a pretty similar routine yesterday evening finally bit the bullet and done his nails as its so difficult and traumatic for him! ~ I really don't see how people do them on their own, I even saw a really funny video on Instagram just the other night of a hog just chilling on its back whilst it calmly let its owner clip away at its nail! . it takes both me and my partner to do our hedgies' nails lol! I did basically same process as you but use my boyfriends lap as the counter lol, and also found covering my hedgies head/body with the towel worked best for him as the bright ceiling light I have to have on to see where I cut really bothers him >< the treat works well as a distraction though! Managed to get two feet done pretty easily without my boyfriend holding him still, but last two feet he did have to help... Thanks for sharing, I'll give the counter a try next time! ^^

Thumbs up

Brilliant! Thank you very much for the idea! Will definitely try this out on Gus's nails after his foot bath.

I'm happy to hear it helped! I typically wake up my little guy around 8 pm, so after a long "night" of sleep, he's happy to eat after the foot bath. I'm with you on keeping them as covered as possible from the lights!

I hope it works/keeps working for you both!
