Default Relm, Rest In Peace

In November I posted on this forum about blood on my hedgehog's wheel. At the urge of others, I took her to the vet. The vet believed that it was a kidney stone, so she gave me medication and a prescription food. Well, in a couple days I noticed Relm had not eaten and had barely had any water. I took her to the vet where they put her under and gave her an IV and an ultrasound. The vet saw that Relm was a little inflamed near her uterus, and suggested using an anti-inflammatory. She said she could do surgery but with such small animals there was always a risk. I decided to try the anti-inflammatory for a couple days and if it didn't work I'd have her operated on.

For all of last week, Relm was back to normal. Eating, drinking, using the bathroom without blood, everything. Then Tuesday night I noticed blood again. I called the vet to schedule surgery on Monday, since that was the earliest they could work her in.

This morning, I found that my hedgie had not touched her water or food. Afraid of dehydration, I took her in to the vet before work. At 9 am the vet called to ask for permission to do emergency surgery.

Just an hour ago, I was told that Relm had tolerated the surgery well, but once she began to wake up, she stopped breathing. They did CPR on her for 20 minutes since her heart was still beating, but they were unable to get her to breathe on her own.

I am heartbroken. I wonder if I had had her operated on earlier if she would have made it. But I guess I'll never know.

That is so sad... Don't beat yourself up. Maybe there were some other underlying problems.. I am so sorry for your loss.

Surgery carries risks, and no surgery carries risks. You made the best decisions you could, hoping the problem would resolve without traumatic intervention. None of us have magical right answers.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Oh my gosh I'm so sorry to read your story. It's easy to beat yourself up over guilt but you must know you did the best you could for your little hog! Getting her to the vet was the most you could have done. It may have been her time to go regardless of when she was operated on so don't let yourself take responsibility for that.

Remember your happiest memories of her. When you first brought her home and all the cute things she's ever done! I hope you are able to find peace in this. Xoxo

I'm so sorry you lost her. I know it's hard and it might take a while to stop, but try not to beat yourself up with guilt too much. It's very clear that you loved her and you did your best for her. I'm sure she knew and appreciated that. I'm sure she's happy and healthy over the Rainbow Bridge now. *HUGS*

I am so sorry for the loss of your little girl. Do not blame yourself; it is perfectly normal to try a less invasive approach if possible. She was so special that heaven opened it's door.
