Default Foot Injury

Hey everyone, I'm back with another question about a problem with Prince Charming. This morning I noticed Charming's back left foot was very swollen and red, and in some parts look dark blue like a bruise. My regular vet was completely booked today so they gave me a few numbers of other vets around the area. The place I took him to had only seen hedgehogs a couple of times but seemed to know what they were doing.

The vet said the injury looked more traumatic than anything, like he got his foot caught on something (although I'm not really sure how). The options were to x-ray the foot to see if there was a serious injury or try some antibiotics, so I opted to try the medicine first because it didn't look like he was limping at all and could bear weight on his foot. So she gave me some wipes for his foot and Baytril to be administered twice daily to see if it gets any better.

Just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before? I feel bad for the little guy, I just want him to be healthy These are the beat pictures he would let me get, sorry the bottom foot pic isn't too great, he's a bit poop dirty

Ouuuch...poor guy, that looks painful. I've not seen anything like that before, but definitely try and figure out how it happened. Could he have gotten it caught under a heavy food dish or other cage furniture? What kind of wheel does he have? Any chance it's a wheel-related injury? Or maybe an injury from when he was having out-of-cage time?

It might be a good idea to take his wheel out to let him rest that foot for a couple days, at least, but you'll have to make that decision & observe him carefully if you try it. Some hedgehogs switch to climbing their cage walls or escaping their cage if they don't have a wheel, which is more dangerous than running on the wheel with his foot would be.
nikki, sheap and Tamara like this.

The things I've come up with are: he got his foot/nail caught in the fabric of one of his snuggle sacs (which I'm now throwing out because it's ripped up), he caught it on the litter box under his wheel because it's a little high to climb in (I have the Carolina Storm Wheel), or he hit it or got it stuck under his food bowl (he LOVES to dig underneath the fleece in his cage either under his wheel or in the middle of his cage somewhere near his food/water, he doesn't really like to sleep in his igloo.)

I'm definitely going to leave his wheel out for the time being until it looks like he's healing. Which I hope will be soon!!

Well, after observing Prince Charming today and just handling him a bit I definitely think there's a sprain or even a break of his foot I'm not really sure what either looks like but I noticed that the bottom part of his leg is a bit swollen and now he seems to be limping a bit and holding his foot up when he's standing still. The vet called me this morning to check up on him (before I noticed he got a bit worse) and I let them know that I didn't think there was any change, and she said that if there's still no change by Monday I definitely need to bring him in again.

I feel so bad because they didn't give me any pain killers for him and he must be in pain if he's showing these symptoms Gah, I wish it was Monday already so I could take him in, I hate how the vets I've gone to aren't open Sunday so I have to wait.
