Default Nail cutting struggle

Hi everyone, my hedgehog Wobble HATES having his nails cut. He’ll squirm and squirm until I get too nervous to cut them and I give up. I’ve been rather worried recently as for about 4 weeks of lockdown he was with my dad who didn’t trim his nails at all. By the time he came to me they looked as if they were going into his toes. I’ve attached pictures of what they’re like at the moment, please tell me if they’re okay or not and any tips on how to keep him still! Also, about half a year ago one of his legs swelled up, we took him to the normal vets as there is no exotic one near us and the vet didn’t have a clue his toe is now slightly greyer than the others, does anyone know what this could be? Thanks 🙂

they could definitely afford a trim. Is his paw okay in the close up attached? One of his toes looks red compared to his others, and I'm not sure if it's just the lighting in the photo.

i use a human nail clippers; i find you have better control/overall easier to use on tiny toes vs small animal nail clippers. You should get him used to having his feet touched in general, but I often find their nails easier to clip when theyre just standing normally and not flipped on their back. They feel more comfortable that way & arent as likely to be as defensive about having their nails clipped. I just have Coco standing on my lap, and then i just gently pick up a paw and start clipping. sometimes having a small bowl of insects for them to distract themselves with while youre clipping helps too.
