Default Baby hedgie with broken leg

Oh help.

We adopted a six week old baby hedgehog, Lucy, on Friday and my daughter noticed her dragging her hind leg at bed time. Saturday it was more pronounced so we called the vet and they were able to see her today.

She has a displaced fracture clean through, in either the tibia or fibula (I can post a pic of the x-ray but didn't want to do so without checking first). The vet is concerned that Lucy is losing sensation in her paw and lower limb. If that occurs she may begin self injuring 😞

The vet feels the injury was recent, possibly from the exercise ball the breeder sold us (that is an issue for another thread).

We need to speak with a specialty surgeon tomorrow to discuss the possibilities of care. A simple cast or splint is not an option bc of the displacement. In the meantime she is on meloxicam for pain management and is eating etc fine.

Scenario one would be surgically pinning the fracture and hoping she regains sensation. This would have to happen asap before it begins to grow together displaced. If sensation does not return she would need amputation.

Scenario two is to go directly to amputation.

Has anyone had experience with either of these procedures? Experience with: pinning a break in a baby hedgehog, regaining sensation after a break and most importantly, skin health after amputation.

After recovery will amputation leave a limb that is prone to sores from friction, using the end of the limb to walk? Considering how their paws end up covered with poop frequently, I'm worried about keeping a limb that's prone to sores from getting infected.

Please help. We are beyond devastated.

I haven't dealt with an amputation but here is a thread from someone else that has. https://www.hedgehogcentral.com/forum...ation-leg.html

I believe with an amputation they would most likely amputate right up to the shoulder, that way there is no stump to worry about and I usually heals up nicely.
