Default Help! Amy has blood!

Question, is it possible Amy could have uterine cancer at this age (less than a year)? She is acting basically the same way (running, drinking, eating, etc.), perhaps maybe a little more cuddly than usual. But anyways, I have noticed blood in her cage lately. It is not from her feet, because I keep the nails trimmed and do not hit the cuticles (plus I took her wheel out last night to see if that was the problem). There is only blood on the part of the cage where she goes to the bathroom as well. It appears like it is bloody urine. Does it sound more like uterine cancer or a UTI? I really want to help my hedgie, but am scared that it will be too expensive for me. How much does an exotic vet visit cost? How much does UTI medicine cost? How much does a hysterectomy cost? I really don't want to lose her.

Absolutely take her the vet. It could also be internal bleeding or any of the possibilities that you listed. It is something to be super concerned about, in my opinion! Pricing varies from vet to vet - it is best to actually go to a vet for a general examination first to see what is wrong with Amy.

From my experience, general examination fees are the same as dogs and cats! Again, it can range greatly; from $30-$70 (this is the range that I came up with, while searching for a vet for Wonton).

Good luck, and please do bring Amy to the vet. ): Money can always be earned again, but not a little hedgie's life!

You won't be able to find out what's going on until you go to a vet. You can call around to vets in the area & ask whether they have experience with hedgehogs (ask for more information on their experience if they say yes - ask how recent it is), and then you can ask what their basic exam fee is, etc.

When you go in, ask for a fine needle aspiration. They need to draw urine out of her bladder with a needle so they can see if it's a UTI. If it is, they'll give you antibiotics for it. If it's not, the blood is probably uterine, which would mean a spay. If that turns out to be the outcome, you can discuss prices with the vet you go to. I don't have experience with spaying hedgehogs, but I know I've seen Nancy say numerous times that laser surgery is more expensive, but worth it because less blood is lost, and the incision heals more quickly. If you do find out it's uterine, do whatever you can to get her spayed sooner rather than later. The longer she loses blood, the weaker she'll get, which isn't good for surgery.
