Unhappy Blood in urine, has been both spayed and treated for UTI

Hi all,

My hedgehog Nellie is almost 4 and is still very active/loving/eating normally/nothing seems out of the ordinary other than the blood in urine. She has been to the vet 5 times in the past 2 months, & 3 different vets for differing opinions. She was first treated for a UTI, when that did not work we went forward with a spaying a month ago...she is still bleeding to this day so the spay did not seem to be the solution. I took her back to the vet 2 weeks post-surgery and she got treated for a UTI a second time, again no luck. All 3 vets are stumped at this point. I am starting to get very sad that I still do not know what is wrong with her & have been spending the big bucks at this point with the recurrent visits/treatments.

Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any ideas what could cause blood in urine other than a UTI? She has had x-rays and ultrasounds that did not show any kidney stones or tumors.

Initial thought I had is has your vet done a urinalysis or a urine culture and sensitivity test?

A urinary tract infection could be resistant to whatever antibiotic was used. Sometimes doing a culture & sensitivity test is necessary to determine what antibiotic will resolve the infection. I had a male once who was diagnosed with a UTI via urinalysis with sedimentation test. We later ran a C&S as the meds weren't working. Found only 1 out of 25 tested to work on that particular bacteria. We were prescribed that med and metacam (to reduce inflammation in the bladder). My boy had another issue (male reproductive cancer as well). But the infection was confirmed to be there and a later test confirmed the 2nd antibiotic did cure the infection.

Something else to think about/ask about...
