Default Sprinkles, you're breaking my bank...

So the vet called today... Still no result on the fungal culture, it hasn't really been long enough, but the cytology test results came back from the lab, and... it's abnormal. Either a keratinous cyst, or a (most likely) benign tumour. Either way, they will need to be removed, and since it seems to be spreading over her eye again, the vet wants to biopsy to make sure it's not malignant.

All of which is fairly positive news, but dear lord, the cost! Sprinkles has gone through our yearly vet budget in her first month, with no guarantee that we won't have more costs in the next few weeks / months. Ugh.
I get that being a responsible pet owner means coughing up for vet bills, and making sure your pet has quality of life, and doing what that entails, BUT, we are also a single income family, with 2 kids, and I can't keep forking out several hundred dollars every couple of weeks for this pet! I just feel so caught between my obligation to my family (to not put us in a deeper financial hole than we can cope with) and my obligation to my pet (which is to follow my vet's advice about what is necessary for her health). How do I get stuck in these situations? All of my pets seem to have bad luck with health, and cost us far more than the typical amount recommended to budget for vet bills.

I'm sorry, this has been a very negative post, I'll quit whining now, I just needed a place to say this.
I love my little Sprinkles, I just wish she wasn't costing *quite* so much money in her first month of living with us!

I'm sorry to hear you guys are going through so much already with Sprinkles! I'll keep fingers crossed that it turns out to be benign and perhaps she'll give you a break from vet bills soon.

Thanks Kelsey.
And mostly underneath all the above is this little voice (which I am trying hard to silence by being upset about cost instead) that is worried that it'll turn out to be some horrible malignant cancer and I'll have to face even worse choices... I just can't even bring myself to think about that at all right now!

I understand Sarah. Sebastian cost a good bit upfront for her, and her original cage and supplies. Then she had babies and we had to house 4 more hedgehogs. Then, while weaning, she got mastitis and cost about 800 in emergency vet bills. That was February/March. And my cat just broke his leg a week.5 ago. Another 700 in emergency vet bills and another 100+ a week to change his splint for 4 weeks and another round of xrays on week 4. Plus additional fees if his leg isn't healed, and it probably won't be.
This year my pets have cost no less than 7000.00 in vet bills and hard supplies. And food? I don't even keep track of it.
And no. I'm not independently wealthy. Though I firmly believe I should be I'm just a mortgage chick. It's been a tough pet year. Usually it's just food and maintenance.

I can relate. I bought my hedgehog Molly who turned out to be quite sick. For a few months we were at the vet's every week. I don't even know how much I ended up spending in vet bills on her, but it was a lot. Luckily, in this case, I live on my own and don't have a family to feed. I didn't get to eat a lot for a few months.
I hope Sprinkles starts to feel better.

I know, right? You budget $200 for the animal, $250 for initial set up (cage, food, heaters, fleece (and then more fleece, and more fleece, lol) toys, etc) plus you figure on an initial wellness check at the vet, hopefully telling you you have a nice healthy pet, and about $1000 for emergencies over the year, and figure you are being a good, responsible pet owner!
I just figure, with my recent luck with pets, I ought to up that initial vet wellness check cost to $1000 straight off the top, and then budget a further $2000 for each year of the pet's life.
Kids' RESP? Sorry sweeties, mummy had pets while you were growing up, lol!

So sorry to hear about Sprinkles the stress of vet bills is definitely a negative when owning pets. All three of my dogs had vet visits this summer - two of them I had to take twice! Unfortunately I spent most of my summer job money paying the vet bills back. But that's what happens with pets ... but I like to think that when you see your animals happy and healthy, it makes it all worth it in the end

Yep. That's really what it's all about. Right there.

Have you talked to your vet about the financial stress? I have a really great vet clinic in my town and when I was dealing with Molly I happened to make a comment (more to myself) about not being able to eat for the rest of the month. The vet was amazing and gave me some free medication and was able to find a way in their computer system to charge me less. I in no way expect that every time I go in, but when I was taking Molly in at least twice a month for a 6 month period, it was greatly appreciated.
Maybe talk to your vet and mention that you had a certain amount saved up for vet costs, but this situation is exceeding it. Maybe they have some options.
