Default Tattered Ears

I just adopted a hedgie yesterday. I noticed today one ear is tattered, torn looking. Looks like it has build up on edges. Other ear just looks like it has the build up.
Any experience with this? Treatment ideas or remedies?
Diet, fungus, mites?
Obviously I will call the vet but hoping for some direction here first.

Previous owner told me today he was eating commercial hedgie food and low grade Walmart brand cat food with freeze dried mealworms! Ugh

You could rub a bit of vaseline on it every day until it clears up (I've heard bag balm works as well). If it doesn't seem to be going away it could be a fungus, but that's generally not the case.

oh, ok. I did actually find another thread that said to try vitamin e. So I will try those and see how it goes.

it's a build up of dry skin so anything that softens it and moisturizes the skin will help it clear up.

vitamin e oil, flax seed oil, and vaseline are options.

RIP Quigley, I miss you my little grumpus.
