Has she seen a veterinarian to rule out medical related issues? Mites, bacterial and fungal infections need to be ruled out if they haven't yet.

She hasn't yet, we don't have any knowledgeable exotic vets around here (Colorado Spring area) that I know of, and most "exotic" vets are outragesously expensive. I am thinking about taking her though, but if there are any at home things I can try I would greatly appreciate some input. Or if anyone knows of a good vet, that would be appreciated as well.

Do a google search for Dr. Russell Welfare in Colorado Springs. I know someone who uses him and he is well versed in hedgehogs. No idea what he charges, but exotic vets are not cheap. Its just the way it has always been.

If you have tried the usual, you may be looking at a skin infection. I have had one or two now that had a skin staph infection that initially presented itself as dry skin. It later progressed to quill loss.

The only other item I can think of is if he is going through a late quilling. If this dry skin is new, and there are new quills poking through, perhaps its a late quilling, he is around a year yes? If you aren't seeing new quills and the quill loss is increasing, you need to have his skin checked out. Especially if you start to see any redness or pustules around the base of the quills.

Holly was doing well, but the oil that I put on her quills to make her skin less dry reeked after a few days so I gave her a bath and put some more on, and now she has a little bit of dry skin, but she is losing quills each night. It was only a few at first, but last night she lost 8. Any suggestions? I was going to email the breeder because she knows a lot about hedgehogs but figured it would be better to just ask on here instead. I will look into vets, but any suggetsion? Thanks guys!

I was advised to never put oil directly on their skin as it can clog pours if its nit rinsed off, which can cause a fungal infection, and nit help with dry skin.

Maybe the coconut oil spray is making it worse and not helping? If the coconut oil reeks, its probably gone off and then it shouldn't be used for anything.
