Exclamation Is my vet bad? Dandruff Irritation and Quill Loss

I have taken my hedgehog to the vet, she does not have mites (vet did a skin scraping and flake check). However, she is losing a lot of quills and I see no signs of regrowth. According to the vet her quills have "rotted away." Vet suspects bacterial or fungal infection. Saw yeast polyps on a gram stain.

The vet prescribed Metacam, Baytril (antibiotic) and an anti-yeast shampoo that I am to use once every three days. She also dosed my hedgehog with Ivermectin--even though there were no visible signs of mites-- and did a ton of fecal tests which I have heard nothing back from even though it's been a week. She told me to call back if I see no improvement in a week so she would give her another dose of Ivermectin along with some selamectin and honestly? My hedgie is losing more quills now than before.

Idk why but I always thought antibiotics and antifungals canceled out a bit? I was also under the impression you should never dose a hedgehog with Ivermectin multiple times--and if we can't find mites are there even any? I have some other concerns about this vet: mainly that it was $195 to even get my hedgehog seen and in total the visit was a whopping $700 dollars WITH a 20% student discount. This woman was also so scatterbrained.

Anyone with experience have advice? Am I being too critical or is this as crazy as I think? I'm also more worried about my hedgehog now than I was a week ago.

Honestly I would find a new vet that deal with hedgehogs and go there. From what you described at the end about them (Not the money part I have no idea on that) you could do with another vet and see what they say.
Exotic vets are pretty expensive in most places I believe.
Sorry I'm not much help.

Dear Ria,

Thank you. I'm calling an animal hospital in my area that has an exotics vet and see if I get her in there and if their vet has experience with hedgehogs. While the current vet has experience with hedgehogs (claims she has seen 60 or more) something really struck me as off about the whole operation. She never used a notebook or written chart notes--just yelled instructions and notes to her attending, sometimes repeatedly so she "wouldn't forget." Not to mention I got sent home with some meds that the doctor told her attending not to give to me since my hedgehog doesn't have internal parasites.

Maybe someone else in the community has experience with her? Dr. April Romagnano from the Avian and Exotic Clinic of Palm City.

Yea that doesn't sound like a very good vet. I hope you can get in with the other vet and have some better luck.
