Default sweet almond oil tantrum

So... I rubbed some sweet almond oil (it's an unscented base oil, and I can't smell it at all) on Winston's ears and he went completely nuts. Spike ball the likes of which I have never seen and hissing, oh man is he hissing. I thought he was having an allergic reaction at first-- but I think he might just hate the smell. Anyway. I put him back in his cage to walk it off, but it's about 15 minutes later and he is intermittently balling up and hissing under his blanket. Should I try to wash it off? Wait to let the smell wear off? I feel really bad :-/ I am also worried he is now going to associate me with this incident and all the bonding we've done will go down the tube.

I did the same thing with Lily and lanolin once. Her reaction was exactly the same & my thoughts were exactly the same! I would see if you can try to wipe his ears some with a wet washcloth & try to get some of it off. You don't want to have water drip down into his ears too much, so wipe instead of wash.

You should be fine re: bonding. At most, he might be grumpy for a few days yet, but he'll forget about it. It'd be a good idea to test anything in the future by putting it on something else (tissue, cotton ball, etc.) & seeing how he reacts to the smell before putting it on him. I learned it the hard way too!
