Default Antibiotics

I have oral (liquid) antibiotics that I have to give my hedgie for a skin infection that she has. My poor girl. She will not take them with any food. I've tried different foods, treats and I don't put a ton of food in to make sure she eats it but she doesn't take any of the food. She didn't eat for 2 days. I have not tried to put the syringe in her mouth to get it the antibiotics in that way or not. Any ideas? I've tried baby food, regular food, piece of chicken. At this point I've wasted 3 days of antibiotic treatments for a 2 week period. If the skin infection doesn't clear up they want to remove it.

Can I ask, why aren't you just syringing it straight to her? You really need to be to make sure she's actually getting the medicine into her. She needs the full 2 weeks of antibiotics, I would contact the vet to get more medication since 3 days is a lot to miss. To give it to her, measure out the medicine dose, then suck up some baby food in the syringe & lightly shake/tap the syringe to mix them. Then syringe it to her directly. There's a sticky in the Health FAQ section with tips & a video to watch.

Is she eating on her own without medicine involved? She can't go longer than she has if she's still not eating - if she won't eat on her own, you'll have to syringe feed her food as well as medicine.

Lilysmommy: She won't let me give it to her in a syringe. She freaks out. Curls into a ball and then won't come back out.

Check the video mentioned in the Health FAQs thread, that might be helpful. Another last resort option is to let your vet know you're having this much trouble getting the meds into her and ask for some needled syringes. Get some canned crickets & see if she'll eat them (you could also use frozen/thawed crickets or canned grasshoppers). Then try injecting the medicine into the insect & offer her that, see if it gets past her.
