Scratching, no flaky skin but small white crusty patch
Hi everyone, I'm a new hedgehog owner (got her a week ago) and I'm a bit concerned about the little hedgie.
When I saw her at the breeder's, she was kept in the same cage as another female and I noticed that both of them scratched themselves a few times.
I brought her home anyway, and she has been scratching on and off since. Knowing that mites is a common and likely problem, I've done some of the usual recommended tests, but the other signs aren't there. No flaky skin, no dandruff and only a few quills fell with the bulb at the end, so I'm waiting for the vet visit later this week.
But today while running my fingers through her back while she was chilling, I noticed a small white crusty patch (in the region of about 4 to 5 quills). My vet friend said it may be fungus and advised me to remove the crust first if I could. I used a pair of tweezers and (gently) pulled off some bits while she was chilling on her side, but couldn't get all of it because I began to hear her whimpering (broke my heart) so I stopped immediately. My vet friend will be able to visit in 2 days.
In the meantime it would be great if I could hear the views of the experienced hedgehog owners here on what my hedgie might be going through and what I should do
If more information helps, she has been eating and drinking fine but hasn't been very active (I'm waiting for the wheel to arrive). She sneezed a bit in the first few days of me bringing her home, but doesn't really do so anymore.
