Default Our hedgehog Ouchie is sick

-Our 4.4 ear old ouchie was totally fine last night
-No change in regular diet or environment, the past 3 years
-Tonight her paws and snout were a bit cooler to the touch
-Slow to move, and weak... but apparently still able to huff

I put her in my lap with her small blanket to warm her up, but after a
minute she vomited about 5mL of frothy white liquid, which seems to
suggest she's been swallowing her own mucus, which in turn may
suggest a respiratory infection.

This suspicion was reinforced 5 minutes later, when her breathing while
asleep was punctuated by brief, hiccup/wheezing-like noise. Once she
warmed up up a bit she slept for an hour in my lap.

When she woke, she semi-stood up, took several steps and then made
several hacking sounds, as if to throw up again, but wound up taking
a dump instead. She no longer made the hiccup/wheezing sound after
that, and was breathing normally, but has been very weak since. She
has shown zero interest in food or water, and I've put her back in her
little plastic cave to sleep.

Here's ouchie, shortly before I put her back in her plastic cave for the
night:

Regular vet is off to some conference or something, so I'm on my own
here. I've never had to deal with something like this before. I've seen
her irritable with an upset stomach (also weak and cold), and with an
infected/inflamed paw ...and she always recovered on her own, but
this is something else.

If anyone has any ideas for helping her, please...
God help me, but I'm afraid of what the morning will bring.

It sounds to me like either she had a hibernation attempt, which could lead to a respiratory infection, or she's sick otherwise, which caused the hibernation attempt. Make sure her cage is warm - even if it's usually kept at a warm temperature, I would bump the temp up a degree or two. Once she's warm, if she still won't eat on her own, you may have to syringe-feed her carefully until the vet comes home. Do you know when they'll be back? You may need to find another vet to take her to in the meantime. It does sound like she may need one if she doesn't go back to normal by tomorrow.

Thanks for the suggestions, Lilysmommy.

I'm in the Philippines, and there really is no other vet that handles hedgehogs:
he'll only be back Monday, which I fear will be too late. It has been surprisingly
cool here in the tropics the past several days: post-Christmas weather here is
usually in the high 70's to low 80's(in your Fahrenheit), but it's been as low as
73. Ouchie's much more used to 80s-90s temps.

It's a quarter to 2:00am here now. Ouchie's still sleeping, and breathing more or
less normally. While I want to let her rest, I also want to check how she is, and
I'll probably do so before sunrise.

Again, thanks, and I'll try to post updates.

Thanks for the help.

Ouchie passed away just before 6:00 this morning
I'd been cradling her in my arms since about 3:00am.
She was asleep, and her breathing just got shallower
and slower, very gradually, and she just faded away.
We will miss her forever.

I am so sorry to hear this.

It is good that you were with her.

Rest in peace dear little Ouchie.

Thanks guys.

As depressed as I am...
I'd like to think Ouchie, Nara, Lily and all the other hedgies before them
are now hanging out in hedgehog heaven, swapping stories about their
former pet humans.

Horge, I really would like to think that they are all together, laughing about us and remembering how much they were loved.

Blessings to you.

It's really hard dealing with loss of a hedgehog. I can remember the day we were choosing names for our new hedgie like it was yesterday. I seriously think about all the different hedgehogs we have lost on a daily basis. It does get easier so don't get too down on yourself.
