I recently went on a trip and left Toggle home with my family. They took great care of him and kept his routine. I got back Wednesday afternoon and have been woken up every night since to this weird chirping noise that stops whenever I move in the bed. At first I thought that maybe he always makes this noise at night and I've just been sleeping lighter because I'm readjusting to his noises, but now I don't think that's the case.
Tonight while he was making that noise I peeled back the t-shirt (he sleeps on a fleece liner with one of my old t-shirts on top) and watched him make the noise. He was moving weird and his face was all scrunched up. I've been googling like a madwoman but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. It doesn't seem to happen while he's out of his cage. I changed the linens and cleaned the bottom of his cage and now he seems to just be playing normally. Should I take him to the vet or just keep listening and watching? What could that noise possibly be if it's not coughing? If it is coughing what would the vet be able to do about it? How much money does a vet visit for a URI or a related illness cost? |

Was he alseep under the shirt? It sounds like you have a dreamer to me. Chirping noises isn't a bad thing, hoglets do it a lot. He may just be a very active dreamer.
Maybe someone else knows if this is related to a URI or something medical? ![]()

It doesn't sound like he's in pain at all... Which I think is a good thing. Hopefully someone on here can tell you what it is. Honestly, I think it's cute so I hope it's nothing bad and you just have a noisy hedgehog.
ETA - http://blog.critterconnection.cc/voc...ion-and-noise/ If you scroll down on this page, it talks about a clicking (kissing sound). Maybe that's what he's doing.

I hope that he's only doing it cause he wants to. He's over a year old and I thought I had heard everything by this point. Maybe he's just recently learned how to make this noise and likes it.
Since he doesn't have any other symptoms of a URI I'm not gonna take him to the emergency vet. I'll wait for monday and if I'm still worried I'll take him in. Thank you guys for you quick responses ![]() |
