Default SMZ TMP antibiotic not working, what should I do?

My hedgehog Geronimo developed what I believe to be a URI. He did not have a drippy nose, but he was starting to wheeze a little and sneeze a few times and was not very energetic. The next morning I called a vet to schedule an appointment.

I researched many vets in my area and this veterinarian advertised that they treated exotics, not just cats and dogs. So when I took Geronimo to the appointment trusting their expertise. The vet tried to give a physical exam, but Geronimo being the stubborn and strong guy that he is, would not uncurl from his ball position. Without completing the exam or diagnosis, the vet gave me SMZ TMP suspension 48 mg/ml to give. 3 twice daily. Geronimo is on his 5th dose over the course of three days. He has not gotten better and has developed watery eyes which is not good. He is eating, drinking, and pooping okay.

I have another appointment scheduled three days from now bc of work conflicts, with a more specialized vet, but I am thinking of a way to get a vet appointment tomorrow because I cannot let this get worse.

I would appreciate anyone's advice on what to do. The SMZ TMP antibiotic does not seem to be working so is there a better antibiotic or medication for him? What should I ask for from the vet? A nebulizer? Baytril? I am past the point of being worried, I am heartbroken that there isn't something I can do right now this second to help him.

My Akita got sick Wednesday and I was at the vet with her as soon as they opened Thursday. Now this vet office is really cool about walk-ins. Not all of them are. You might try just being there and tell them he has to be seen. Even in vet's offices that aren't cool with walk-ins, I've gotten them to look at my pet by just showing up. The reception staff sometimes grumbles, but I've always gotten in. I'm usually not a pushy person, but I get too worried about my animals to wait sometimes. Akita is on Baytril.

Although that was 12 days ago. She probably has resolved the issue by now. I will start checking dates better.
