Default Possible URI?

Unfortunately, Punk, my 2.5 yr old hedgie, has had no luck recently, health-wise.

He has been struggling with his weight, which has caused one of his paws to swell and some of his toes on the outside to swell. He has seen two vets for it so far (one exotics vet and one vet from the clinic I work at), and they have recommended a diet change as well as an increase in exercise. Both of which he has been doing well with.

However, this evening I noticed that he has an irritated patch of red right underneath his nose that he is constantly licking at and he is sneezing (which normally isn't something I would worry over, but paired with his nose-licking I am slightly concerned). Am I right to suspect a URI, or am I being a touch paranoid? I know that it has started sometime within the past two days, but I am not sure of the exact day--I have not been the best hog-mom and this is the first time he's been out in two days

In either case, he will probably take a trip with me to work tomorrow, so I can keep an eye on him (and possibly get an evaluation by one of the vets I work with).

It does sound like a URI, sneezing is a very good sign of one. Its a good thing you'll be taking him to the vet.

Apart from the sneezing and licking, is his mucous clear or cloudy? Or can you not see any discharge at all? Two tell tell signs for me wiTh respitory infections are cloudy/thick discharge and snot bubbles. Stress greatly increases the chance of contracting an illness such as a URI because it weakens the immune system. Based on what you've disclosed in your post, it stands to reason that he contracted the URI as a combined result of poor health and the stress of a new diet and exercise regimen. Fortunately, if caught and treated early enough, respitory infections are fairly easy to treat. I personally reccommend baytril oral for treatment.

Thank you both for your replies, I really appreciate it!

So far the only thing that I've seen come out of his nose is a clear, slightly sticky liquid. There was some dripping action this morning, but it had stopped dripping by noon-ish.

The vet that saw him today said that it could be several things, like allergies (we have had several bad storms here, and it has kicked up a bunch of pollen and such. Or maybe from some of the new food that I am feeding him), but just to make sure that it isn't the start of a URI she prescribed some Baytril (the oral kind), which should be coming in either tomorrow or Friday.
