We are hogsitting our friend's young hedgehog (he was born jan 30). When we got him home from picking him up we noticed he was sniffing and coughing and sneezing. We don't have the money to take him to the vet and our friend should be home in a day or so. Since honey is an antihistamine, is it okay to give him just a small amount to maybe calm his body down? Is there anything else we can give him in the mean time to sooth the poor dear?

If you suspect a URI, I guess the honey is okay, but taking him to the vet is IMPORTANT. You should call your friend and come to an agreement to take him to the vet. The longer a URI is left untreated, the deadlier it is for the hedgie, trust me. My baby had a URI that turned into pneumonia in less then a week, and you want to treat it fast or else its detrimental to the hedgehog, and your wallet. I guess you can always wait for your friend to get home, but my suggestion would be to take him to an exotic vet ASAP, and then perhaps ask your friend to pay you back once they get home.
