Default Tooth problems/can't eat meal worms

A few months ago, I realized my hedgehog was having trouble eating his kibble.

I started soaking it so it would be soft and that seemed to solve the problem, but tonight, he couldn't even chew his mealies. He kept chewing and chewing (which made me panic because I thought he would choke) then eventually having to spit them out.

He loves mealies more than about anything else in the world, and I know he needs insects in his diet to stay healthy.

Any ideas of what to do?

He just turned three in December and he's never had any other health problems.

It's time to schedule a vet appointment.

The vet will most likely have to gas him to get a real good look at his mouth. It's possible that there may be some infected teeth, or he may plain well be missing all his teeth.

As for mealies, you can keep them long enough just until they shed. They are the softest and easily chewed when they are white. Some find the pupae stage(alien stage) to be easy to eat as well.

I'd book a vet appointment for as soon as you can. If he's been having trouble chewing for a few months now, it could just be that his teeth/jaw are getting weaker, but it could be a sign of a bad tooth or other mouth issues that need to be checked out, especially if it's escalating in only a few months.

Thank you both so much!

I'll be calling first thing in the morning to schedule him an appointment.

Also, thanks for the tips on the meal worms. I used to have a colony, but I've moved twice recently and just haven't set one up again. I've been feeding him his mealies out of the fridge recently. Guess it's time to set it up again.

SO GLAD I got him that appointment. Posting just because I'm so relieved.

I was beginning to get pessimistic and worry that it was tumors (since he's three I'm always on the lookout for tumors), but he had two abscessed molars. Just to make me feel better, while he was out the vet x-rayed his jaw, then he pulled the bad teeth.

Beezy's on an antibiotic and painkillers for a few days. But he should be right as rain again soon!

Poor guy, I'm so glad you took him in! And even more glad that it was an easy fix and he'll be well again soon!
