Oral Medications
Okay, so Lilo had her vet appointment for the abscess on her paw this morning (Dr. Weldon and I think she got a small splinter from her wooden tunnel). It was pretty infected and the vet had to put her under so she could open it up and drain it. She prescribed Lilo a liquid pain killer and an antibiotic that are required to be given orally, but the poor thing just doesn't want to take them. The first time I gave it to her (this morning) she was so stressed that she vomited it back up. So my question is, what is a good way to administer oral medications and make sure that she keeps them down? Any suggestions? She has two weeks of this twice a day as well as a topical cream, so I want to make this as stress free as possible. Thanks for the help!

Re: Oral Medications
Does she like baby food? if so maybe (not an expert here) you could mix it in with the food. Put the meds in the syringe and suck up some baby food then mix them together meds first so you know you have the correct amount. It might work to help calm her tummie down to. Its a suggestion that might and might not work I don't know for sure.

I agree with Tigereyes' suggestion - mixing the meds with baby food can help a lot. It disguises the taste (some antibiotics taste just horrible and that can sometimes be the reason for them throwing up right after), and it puts something in their tummy so it might keep it more settled than meds in an empty stomach. Some baby foods you could try, if you haven't tried them with her yet - chicken, turkey, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, and apples have all been popular with many hedgies. You may want to introduce her to some of the baby food on its own before you start mixing it with medicine - some hedgehogs will annoint with the new tasty food, and the meds won't do any good on her quills!
