Question Kidney disease in Hedgehogs?

Hello! First of all, I am very sorry that this post is probably in the wrong place, however I was not certain where to start a thread.

Basically, is there such thing as kidney disease in hedgehogs? Luis is 5 years old and drinks a ton of water sometimes. I know that in dogs and cats this is a warning sign if kidney problems but am unsure if kidney failure is even a problem in hedgehogs.

Sometimes I will see Luis drinking for minutes straight, and it is getting increasingly worse. At first I thought is must have been because he had just been active or anointed and needed to rehydrate, but it had started to freak me out. Sometimes in the morning what was a full bowl of water is nearly empty...

Is it normal for hedgehogs to drink this much water? Is kidney disease a problem in hedgehogs? If it is I know a vet and can schedule an appointment ASAP! I am worried

I would assume that it's possible. Any thing with kidneys can get kidney disease. If he's drinking that much water I would have him checked out

Do you use a bowl or a bottle for water?

Oh good, I was thinking that if you were using a bottle he might be having trouble with it.

Looking back on previous posts from you, something stood out to me. Earlier you were concerned about Luis' weight. How has that progressed? Had he went to a healthier weight or is he still a chubby guy?
Sometimes things that don't seem connected could be. If you hadn't been able to get his weight down with diet changes, and a larger water intake that could narrow down what were looking at.

The week that I was given Luis he weighed 610 grams. He now weighs 590. I think that the higher quality food is helping him to slowly get to his ideal weight.

Default How's the little one doing?

Just wanted to ask how your guy was doing. I found this thread because we just lost ours last night to kidney failure. He was just a baby. Docs said it was probably congenital and that they never properly developed as we never gave him any food besides his Spike's and strawberry baby food (that didn't have grape juice in it.)

He went downhill so fast. Check his gumline for ulcers on either side near the back. That was how the ER vet caught it. We took him to Alameda East which for a time was featured on Animal Planet. Some of the best vets in the nation.

Our first sign that something was odd was that he drank a lot of water. It was only about a week until he was sick. He started to wobble and be unsteady on his feet. I thought it was a hibernation attempt, but he didn't have any other symptoms. We took him to a vet Tuesday afternoon, and by Wednesday night we were in the ER with him.

I don't want to be an alarmist, but our hearts are breaking for our little guy and I don't want to see anyone else's lil pog go through it.

Please keep us updated.
