Default Anesthesia For a Mouth Exam

Hi all- I need some advice/ reassurance that things will be alright. Little miss Emma has had some pretty bad breath over the last couple of weeks, which I combed the forums and found that it could be a tooth issue. She has been eating and drinking regularly, but to be safe I scheduled an appointment with the only exotics vet in the area that was highly recommended by a coworker. However, when I was talking to her she said that they would have to anesthetize her to do an oral exam and clean her teeth. I am so nervous about her being put under. Is it safe for them to do this? I don't want to let it go and then have it turn out to be a huge problem later on. Trying not to panic. Anyone have any words of advice?

Anesthesia is always a risk, especially for small animals. But generally it's a lesser risk as compared to what it's typically needed for - thorough exams, mouth exams, surgery, etc., which are all often essential to keeping a hedgehog healthy & comfortable. I would consider it worth the risk if you're concerned she has a mouth/tooth issue. Those kinds of problems can get worse very quickly & can cause extensive issues if they're not taken care of. Better to get her checked out & hope she does okay handling the anesthesia. For what it's worth, I haven't heard of very many hedgehogs having a very bad reaction or dying due to anesthesia.

Thank you for the reassurance Lillysmommy :3 I just dropped her off and I'm still nervous. She hasn't been away from me since I got her. I have a weeklong vacation in June and I don't know how I am going to manage being 2000 miles away from her!

I hope it goes well! Let us know how she does and what you find out. Hopefully it's nothing serious or even nothing at all. And I know what you mean, I hate being away from my animals while on vacation! They're like my babies, and I worry constantly about them.
