A rheostat will not turn the emitter up, down or on off on it's own. You have to do it. A rheostat is like a dimmer switch for a light bulb. You can brighten (more heat), or dim (less heat) the light, but you have to do it.

A thermostat is what you need and it will turn the emitter up, down, on or off depending on the temperature you set it for. It is like the thermostat in your house. You set it for the temperature you want and it keeps it at the temperature you want.
