Default Hibernation?

Yesterday I noticed that my hedgie didn't want to play as much as he usually does and when I cuddled him instead of going to sleep he just sat in my lap and stared at me.
I thought he would be back to his old self in the morning and put him to bed.
He ate all his food last night and I swear I even heard him running on the wheel.
But when I woke him up about an hour ago to play he played for a few minutes then just stopped...and wouldn't come out of his ball. I immediately put him on a heating pad and put my space heater on him. He is doing better now, breathing normal again and looking around but I'm wondering if that was an attempt at hibernation or if he is sick and I should take him to the vet?
Thoughts?

What's the temperature of the cage? Was your Hog's belly cool?

It was 70 in the room and he's never had a problem at that before. his belly didn't seem cool to me but I didn't really get to check it before he curled up.
I've turned up the temp to 80 now for him

Should definitely have a thermometer in the cage. The temperature can always be different from room temperature depending on placement like by a window etc.

Temperature in the cage should be between 72-80 degrees.

The temp was 70 when he was running around the room and curled up last night. I turned it up to 80 today. Should he still be a little lethargic and off 24 hours after attempting hibernation?

80 is probably too high. Turn it back down (slowly) to 75 or so and see how he does with that.
