Unhappy Today I heard a sad story pertaining to hibernation.

I thought I would share it, because I know it broke my heart.

I was at Petsmart, buying freeze dried crickets for Demi. I got up to the counter and started talking to the girl at the counter. The topic of what I was getting the crickets for came up and I told her I had a hedgie and I was going to give her crickets as a treat. The girl proceeded to tell me about a hedgie she'd had. She pretty much told me that, they had placed his cage in the living room so everyone could enjoy him. He was fine until winter showed up. For some reason his cage was by the front door! (I don't know why!) Within an hour of the draft and cold air blowing on this poor little guy, he went into hibernation. When they found him he was cold and stiff, and even though they tried to warm him up he wouldn't wake up.

I really just couldn't imagine finding Demi like that. I offered her my condolences. I didn't really know what else to say, but I was so sad for her and her hedgie. I'm so glad Demi is as far from the draft of the front door as she can get.

So I guess the moral of that sad tale is to me mindful of where the cage is.

So sad....but a cautionary tale. It is so important for everyone to really understand how fast that can happen. The heating systems are vital. All new owners need to understand that!
