Default Hibernation or Confusion? HELP!

A few days ago I bought my hedgehog a heat lamp because it got below 70 in my house. I bought a ceramic clamp lamp with a red 100w (I think?) bulb. The petco people suggested a red bulb instead of a black. Once I bought him the heat lamp he has been sleeping constantly, not using his wheel, hardly has had any bowel movements, and is a little more apathetic than usual. I'm not sure if he is confused having the red light bulb on at night, which makes him think its day time or if he is still too cold in the house and has started to hibernate. When I pick him up, he doesn't seem cold and is always producing heat when I have him in his sleeping bag. Basically, I'm freaking out and have him under my sweatshirt trying to warm him up. What should I do? I don't want my baby to be in trouble!

It's not a good sign that he is acting lazy and not wheeling. Often pet stores don't have a ton of knowledge about hedgehogs. Hedgies can be very particular about a light source. Some will ONLY come out if it's completely dark in the room...so the red light may be bothering him. I would think the first step would be to get a ceramic heat emitter bulb (CHE). Hedgie just needs heat, no red light. You also need to have a thermometer in the cage so you can know for sure what the temperature is. There are also thermostats that can be attached to make sure the heat is regulated within the correct range. If these changes don't yield improvements in your hedgehog the next step may be to visit a vet to be sure his health is not failing him somehow.

Also...is food and water intake normal? Have you seen any significant changes in his weight?

Some hedgehogs are very sensitive to light, and the red light can be enough to keep them hiding all night long. I'd replace it with a black bulb (zero light emission) to see if that helps.

Do you have a thermostat to control the CHE, turning it on and off as needed?

Supposedly even the black light bulbs can cause problems, though I wouldn't think it'd be as like as red. A CHE would be the best thing to get, rather than any of the heating light bulbs, since they definitely don't produce light of any kind. Just make sure you get a thermostat to control it as well, like was already said.

Ah, I meant, "CHE bulb painted black" because that's what I've seen, although from browsing online it also looks like "CHE bulb painted white" is the exact same thing.

I did not mean, "UV black light for a rave in the hedgehog cage!"

Ah, okay! Sorry for misunderstanding, heh. Although a hedgehog rave does sound pretty awesome...
