Even heat distribution. If there's just one in the center of the cage it won't be as evenly heated.

If there's just one lamp it also puts more strain on it to heat the whole thing itself and can burn out/blow a fuse. Having two means neither one will have to work as hard and won't burn out. If you have a wire cage the lamps can be placed directly on the wire because the bulb is far back enough in the lamp that it won't burn, so that also lets the heat get into the cage more directly.

If you have a wire cage with that plastic-ish coating, it's ok to set the lamps directly on that. If you have a plastic bin, you can put a wire grate over the top and set the lamp on that and you should be good. (Something like a couple of these panels connected together: http://www.target.com/p/closetmaid-w...m=wire+storage)

I think I forgot to mention that you may not need two lamps, it depends on the size of the cage. The cage I have is 48" x 18", so I use two.

And I'm glad I could help! That's what we're here for! I hope your little guy starts to get his energy back. Keep us posted on how he's doing. And you should read through this guide. It was put together by LizardGirl, one of the breeders here on the forum, and is an incredible resource. It can answer most questions that come up. You can download it free or purchase a hard copy: http://www.westcoasthedgehogs.com/fi...ook/index.html

The lamps come in other sizes so you can pick whatever works best. I think there's a 10", an 8.5", and a 5.5".
