Default Heat Lamp Reviews

Sorry, wasn't sure where to put this....but what heat lamps do you guys recommend the most? Right now i have a Fluckers Clamp Lamp with Dimmer, in ,i think, a 12", not sure, it was the largest one at petsmart? In a blue box? Anyways, It just doesnt seem to be creating enough heat, and i've been forced to use a portable heater most of the day, luckily the room she's in traps heat really well. Also, the light is way to strong from the lamp. Petsmart was compleatly out of no-light bulbs when i went to get the lamp, so i was forced to get an infrared one...is this okay? I am planning on getting a no-light bulb asap!
So what lamps do you use, and what is the warmest lamp you know of? Thanks!

CHE set ups worked best for me, but I found they can have a hard time heating a really open cage if the room temperature is pretty low. Lily had a 3x2 C&C cage and in order to keep her cage from 78-81* with two 150watt CHEs, I had to heat my room to 74-76 degrees with a space heater too.

I'm guessing if you're having a problem getting enough heat from the lamp, it's due to the wattage, cage being open, or both. You should definitely get a CHE bulb soon, if the bulb is one that gives off light. Do you know what wattage the bulb you have now is? Try to get a higher wattage when you get the CHE bulb and see if it does a better job of keeping the cage warm. If you have a longer cage, you may also need two CHE set-ups to heat the whole cage evenly and not have the corners be chilly. To insulate the cage and help hold in heat, you can put blankets or plastic around the sides (just make sure anything you put on the cage for insulation doesn't have a way to fall against the heating lamp). Just make sure you leave the front open for ventilation. You can also put a thick quilt under the cage to help hold in heat that way.

I have a 150 watt CHE in an 8" clamp lamp. My cage is 40x18" and I found I needed to wrap fleece around the back, sides, and the top (away from the lamp) to keep the temp up. But I also keep my house at 68F in the winter, and with the cage being so open, one lamp just won't cut it without wrapping the cage this way. The fleece really, really helps to keep the temp where it needs to be.

Thanks, i do wrap blankets around it but never knew about the fleece! and thanks so much about the CHE bulb, i'll go get one now....but the lamp i have is for incandescent bulbs? Will a CHE still work or do i need to take everything back and get a lamp that works with a CHE bulb?

This is the lamp i have: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... lInUS%2FNo

Ah, yeah, you'll need to return that one and get the Fluker's Clamp Lamp that's rated for use with a CHE bulb. Try to get the 10" one if you can, they spread the heat out better. And yup, the bulb is what you're looking for!

You want to make sure the lamp you get has a porcelain socket, like these: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... 9CD54A2923

However, I don't know if Fluker's makes a 10.5". I know that Zilla does. I have the 8.5" Zilla, and I plan on upgrading to larger one soon.

Fluker's doesn't have a 10.5", but they do have a 10" one, I had two of them.

Haha, I am wrong on brands I have the Zoo Med 8.5" and it's the Zoo Med 10" that I plan on getting. Zilla, Zoo Med...it's all running together on me

I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Deluxe-Po ... B0002AQCXM

I am also picking this one up: http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Deluxe-Po ... B0002DIWWS

Haha... yeah... they all run together after awhile... 10" or 10.5. ZooMed or Flukers. And definitely use a thermostat to regulate the temperature. That's where the Zilla comes in. ...or other brand...
Either way, I'd pick up one and a spare of each. They last a good long while, but when they go, it's always at the most inconvenient time: it's 11:14pm, on a holiday, outside temp is forecast to be 12F with ice, etc...
