Default Mochi's first attempt to hibernate

Tonight, Mochi tried to hibernate, but luckily I have had he rlong enough to realize something was wrong. There were multuple indications that something was amiss. First sign, I didn't hear her scurry into hiding or dig deeper under her wood chips when I turned on the light over her area. Second sign, she didn't come over to her food dish after filled I it with food. I wasn't really alarmed by these yet two since I thought she was sleeping still and a little grumpy. However, after I refilled her water and started distubing her set up rearranging the wood chips away from her water dish I realized she had been sitting in mound of soaked water chips. I put it all together suddenly: no movement, no huffing/puffing, AND wet cold environment!

I pulled her out of her cage and she was in a tight coil balled no matter how I held her she wouldn't unwrap. Luckily she wasn't too far gone. Her quill reflexes were intact though a little dulled. I placed her in a blanket and rubbed her with my hands until she unwrapped from her ball. Then I blow dryed her on a low setting until she was able to move around and huff at me. Now, she is lying in my lap wrapped in a blanket. I keep making her walk around to make sure the spell has been broken. She's exploring my bed now so we should be in the clear.

When I was preparing for getting her, I came to this site frequently to learn and I learned a lot. Luckily, this site warned me about the perils and signs of hibernation and the importance of quick actions. I stored the information away and it came in handy tonight. Mochi has been a part of life for over a year now and I am fortunate to have her and hedgehog central to ensure that she continues in my life for as long as possible.

A million times thank you!!!
