Unhappy Hibernation Prevention

Hey guys!

Lately my little girl has (I think) been trying to hibernate. Her tank is at an ideal temperature, so I'm pretty sure that's not why she's doing it.

My question--has anyone used lighting in their setups to prevent hibernation?

I read on a UK blog that if your hedgie doesn't get enough light each day (even though they are sleeping) they could try to go into hibernation.

And yes we all use light set ups, if they dont get a daily around 10 hours or so they can attempt yes. That's why I freak on my dad when he turns my lights off!

Yes, lighting is just as important as temperature in preventing hibernation. It's usually necessary to have a light on near the cage that's turned on in the morning and off at night in order to make sure they get 12-14 hours of light. A lot of people will just put the light on a timer, so they don't have to worry about forgetting it. If they don't get enough light, that signals to their brain just like cooler temperatures do and tells their body that it's hibernation time.

If you get her on a regular light schedule and she's still getting cool, you might want to try bumping the temperature up a degree or two anyway (especially if she's not a baby...sometimes they can get more temp-sensitive as they get older), and if neither of those things help, it's time for a vet visit to see if there's something else wrong.
