Exclamation Any Advice

Hi, I am a new hedgehog owner. she was given to me from a friend who just didnt have time for her. She is pretty shy still and wont come out often until she is comfy and I am asleep and I can hear her playing in her cage. However tonight she hasn;t come out of her hidy hole yet and when I checked on her she is still balled up. Breathing, but she isn't making her "dissatisfied" sounds or moving. Her room is around 20 degrees right now, is there anything I should be doing?

Take her out right away & feel her. If she's cold, you need to cuddle her until she warms up & starts responding. She's attempting hibernation, which is very dangerous for pet hedgehogs. If she doesn't start responding & warming up within an hour, she needs a vet immediately.

If she's warm, she's probably just being shy & scared. But 20C is way too cold for her, and you need to get a heating set up for her & get the temperature up ASAP whether she's attempting hibernation now or not. Turn the temperature in your house/apartment up right now, if you can. Otherwise she needs a heating set up today. A space heater is usually easier to find at local stores, but if you can, a ceramic heat emitter set up is usually preferred as they warm up just the cage, not the whole room. For that, you need a CHE bulb (probably 100-150 watts), a 10" lamp, and a thermostat to control it. The thermostat isn't optional, but pet stores don't always have them in stock. A lot of people will order the stuff online, but you do need to get it as soon as you can (in the next couple days) so you can keep her at the proper temperatures. Until you have a heating set up for her, you need to keep the temperature up some other way. It should be somewhere between 23 & 27, and most people aim for around 24.

Thank you, I will go to a couple pet stores today asap to try and figure this out for her, I did bundle her up and she is responsive. I have the heat on in the room for her now and will it on all day. I can't do the space heater when I'm not here in the day for safety reasons. I will look for a ceramic hear emitter today, do the pet stores typically sell a CHE bulb and the type of thermostat??

I'm glad she's responsive! That's a good sign.

Pet stores will usually have some CHE bulbs in, as well as lamp, but the thermostat usually seems to be harder to find. You could try calling around if you have multiple stores in the area & don't want to drive around to all of them trying to find the right things. If you can get the other two things & not the thermostat, that would be okay for a very limited time (until you can get one ordered online). You'd just need to monitor the temperature carefully & see how warm it gets, and possibly adjust the positioning of the lamp to keep it from getting too hot.

Oh, and if you don't already have one, a digital thermometer with a probe is a good idea for monitoring the temperature in the cage as well. Those are pretty cheap and can be found in the outdoor sections of large stores like Walmart (though I don't know what stores you'd have that are similar in Canada). Home improvement type stores would probably have them as well. You could find them at pet stores, they're just usually more expensive than ones from other stores. Good luck! I hope a pet store will have everything you need so you can get it set right up.
