Eeek it looks like the follicle is attached which I think is bad. I'd def take to a vet. Maybe mites?

My guess is a skin infection. Lily had big chunks of skin/quills coming off like that when she had her skin infection(s). Definitely time for the vet, they need to do a skin scrape & culture to see what kind of infection it is. If it's bacterial, she'll get antibiotics. If it's fungal, it'll be an anti-fungal med.

If the vet thinks it may be mites or wants to treat for them just in case, make sure you only use Revolution, not Ivermectin. Revolution is applied topically, just on the skin, and Ivermectin is usually given as an injection. There have been cases of Ivermectin causing hedgehog deaths.

It's much less likely to be mites if they're on fleece, but it's happened before. I know there's been one theory I've seen that mites are on them in general (after they're exposed once or something), and they don't flourish & become a major problem unless something happens to impact hedgie's immune system and allow them to get a foothold (stress, hibernation attempt, etc.). I don't know if it's true or not, it's just a theory. I just wanted to mention the Revolution thing in case the vet does want to preventatively treat for mites, because that is sometimes done, and it's safe as long as Revolution is used. I really think it's a skin infection though. I only remember seeing this happen when Lily had her infections, but not when she had mites (though that was early on in our time together, so my memory is fuzzy). She just lost tons and tons of quills as single quills when she had mites.
