I don't recall seeing this yet or not. But comb through your hedgehog's quills. Look for the following:

  • signs of new quills poking through,
  • redness or oddness (swelling, pustules, etc) around the base of the quills,
  • for thin spots or spots that are completely quill free (other than the reverse mohawk of course).
  • Pick up a couple of the quills, and try to bend them. Do they seem brittle?

If you see new quills growing in, that's a good thing. Any of the rest and you will want to consider a veterinary visit to have the area of concern examined.

If nobody minds me asking, what do brittle quills mean? My Penny has the occasional brittle quill and she has even broken one while still connected to her. It fell off later that day. I just assumed these were anomalies.

She is almost five months old, is going through a decent quilling right now, the first one since she went through her first quilling around two months. She had her first check up in July and everything was fine.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

That just depends on what other symptoms are involved. I asked the question because the original symptom is quill loss.

If it was a question of a broken quills, I'd ask if they raised their quills a lot to prevent themselves from being removed from their cage and perhaps were breaking them against a tunnel, or getting them caught on something else. They can damage a couple of quills, making them brittle, without there being a big problem.

But since this question involved quill loss. Add in brittle and I start to worry about nutritional deficiency or health issues.

If the hedgehog is also experiencing new quill growth, then it may just be replacing old damaged quills.

As with most things hedgehog, it all just depends on what combination of symptoms and circumstances are present.

so i gave Tiggy a bath tonight and had a good look at her skin.
it isnt dry, no sores, no mites. skin looks good. I could see just a couple places where it looks like a new quill is coming though.

oh and no broken quills.

all the quills i have found in her cage are smaller then her main quills.

Weird question coming at you. Are you sure she is 12 months old?

She could just be losing the rest of her baby quills but to me it seems like a year old is really late to be losing those.
