Default Penny losing large amount of quills.

My hedgie Penny is turning 5 months old this month. She is losing a giant amount of quills. I can see some new quill growth but not nearly as much as she is losing. She has a few small bald batches but nothing giant.

I have taken her to two vets. The second gave me Revolution for her and I gave her the first dose last week. I have been using Humilac on her skin which has really helped decrease on the flakes.

Every morning, I probably pick up 20 or so quills. What should my next step be? Is it just quilling?

Guess it is too late to edit and add more information:

I started off using flax oil but I didn't really like the way that it made her smell. The Humilac has been working great so far, although she HATES getting sprayed.

I am feeding her a mix of Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers and Blue Buffalo as well as adding Sunshine Factor occasionally to some wet cat food. She also loves freeze dried mealies.

I have had her on fleece bedding since I got her and use paper towel under her wheel. I have never used litter or other types of bedding with her.

She has been wheeling like crazy (and I have the wheel to prove it - yuck!) still and eating/drinking like normal. My heat is consistently at about 75 degrees. She also isn't really itchy or scratching anymore.

What should my next step be?

Just took her out and she lost 20 quills on a matter of about 15 minutes.

I don't even know what to do next. Keep waiting to see if Revolution helps?

So frustrating.

I had a very similar situation with my male, he just one day started loosing mass amounts of quills at the start of winter, he was treated for mites but it didnt really show any results till 2 months later (we never found any mites and highly suspect he never had them) It could all ust be winter stress as my other 2 started loosing quills around the same time but not as much as him. They lost maybe 3-4 a day? Just give it time and love. Just a warning my male had a decrease in temperament and is much huffier.

Should I pursue yet another vet? Her quills are thinning out so much and I'm worried.

I am supposed to give the second dose of Revolution next week.

Should I just be patient and see if it improves?

Does anyone please have any recommendations?

Should I wait until the second dose of Revolution before I take her in? The bald patches are concerning.

I think personally I'd wait, but I'm honestly not sure. It's up to your gut feeling - if you're really concerned about the bald patches, it won't hurt to try another vet and have tests for bacterial/fungal infection done, just in case. (I can't recall if you've already had this done or not, if so, sorry!) Lily had mites, about 6 months or so after I got her, I think, and she ended up with some pretty big bald patches & was losing quite a lot of quills even during the Revolution. I know she lost 100+ quills a day for a few days, at least. It was pretty concerning, but once we went through the Revolution doses and daily cleaning, etc. the quill loss eventually slowed and she eventually grew quills back in.

Thank you for your responses! I feel a bit better now and will wait until the other doses before I proceed.

Thank you!

EXCITING NEWS! Quill lost seems to have decreased and today I spotted a new quill growing in a bald patch!

Need to give her the second dose of Revolution on Thursday, but now off to give her an oatmeal bath. :]
