Default My Tymoor is going bald just in 2 days

Hello everyone,
I have a long ears hedgehog for about 5 months now… I found him in our backyard so I don’t know how old he is.. but I guess he is around a year old.. maybe a little less or a little more..
He is eating well 2 times a day (cat dry food- boiled eggs- steamed rice with meat or chicken- vegetables and fruits)…
The problem is that he started to lose his quills rapidly… that in the last 2 days he lost most of the quills from his back and he got bald in that area… his skin is dry and flaky… he is becoming very very aggressive and he is trying to reach my hand just to bite it.
I tried to scrap some flak on a dark paper and it was not moving… also I sent some pics to my vet and he said that it might not be mites…
(I have attached some pics for my hedgehog)
I brushed him with olive oil using a toothbrush in case it is just a dry skin…
But I am too scared about him and I’m freaking out each time I hold him up…
There are a tiny quills coming out, very few of them that will not cover his bald back…
What should I do?? I am very scared.. please advise me…

Many thanks
Amal

It's almost definitely mites. Get him treated with Revolution, or if that's not available in your area, Ivermectin can be used ONLY topically - NEVER allow your vet to give your hedgehog an injection of Ivermectin. The correct dosing for each of those medications is 1-2 drops per 400g of the body weight. Ivermectin is much more dose sensitive whereas Revolution is very difficult to overdose, so you should go with Revolution unless that isn't an option because of your location.

I took Tymoor to the vet today and he gave him a tiny drop of revolution as per your advice regarding his wieght
And after 3 weeks he will give him another drop..
Do you know when it will take effect ? When all the mites will go away?

Thank you..

He should stop scratching within about 24 hours as the Revolution kills the mites. He may continue to loose quills for a month or longer as the damaged quills continue to fall out.

Ok.. one last question.. just to make sure that Taymoor is healing propably
I gave him yesterday an olive oil bath... all the dry flaky skin is gone and today he is still having a smooth skin... if the flake is gone, does it mean the mites are gone too?
Thank you...

Nope, just means his skin isn't as dry and flakey now. The main way to know mites are gone are when he's not itching frantically anymore. It'll take a few extra weeks after mites are gone before he stops losing any quills and you can see new ones starting to come in.

Hello there

Just an update on how my Taymoor is doing..
Well, thanks god, no more quill loss at all (only from 1 - 2 quills evey 3 - 4 days).
New quills are coming out perfectly.
He is still hessing at me but no more biting and no more aggression at all..
i did not take him to the vet for the second revolution drop because i got really busy.. Do I still have to?

Thank you very much for everyone who helped me in here I am really grateful
