Default quilling questions

Hi so I am a soon to be new mommy and I am in obsessive research mode. I have been searching around but I am still a little confused about quilling. I know it will happen around 9 weeks and then again later. But my biggiest question is how many quills will they lose and how long this process takes? Also will it be a significant loss at once or gradual over time. Thanks to anyone who can clean up my confusion!!

The amount of quills will kind of vary by hedgehog. You should never see bald spots where quills should be, nor should it be noticeably thinner. New quills will be growing in as baby ones fall out. Hedgehogs will generally have several different rounds of quilling through their first year. Some hedgehogs will have short quillings, some will have longer. Some will have one run into the next and feel like it's taking forever. But it all should pretty much be done by 1 year old.

Shinydistraction got it spot on. My hedgehog is 4 months and I've never noticed him losing any more that 3-5 quills in a given day. just look out for skin that seems overly irritated or bloody, some irritation is normal, but if there is any excessive swelling, redness, or bleeding occurring, there might be a possible ingrown or infection occurring where a vet's assistance, or the guidance of a more experienced member here, may be needed for how to best proceed.
