Exclamation Dry Skin or Mites?

Hello,

Last night when I took Shelby out of her cage, she started to itch her back. And she kept doing it. I put her back because she was going to poo, but I'm very worried why she might be itching because I've never seen her itch before. I don't think it's dry skin though because her skin didn't look dry and she's had worse cases of dry skin, and didn't itch. I'm very worried it's fleas or mites etc. She is 6 months and still losing quills, which I know is normal. But when I go to pet her, some of her quills fall out, and are loose. I'm not being rough either, just strokes on the back is all I'm doing.

What should I do?

My girl is currently quilling too, and she itches a lot too. She doesn't just itch her quills, she itches her sides just under quills, too. I just had her out last night and while I would pet her, she would start a frantic itching. If you're worried it's dry skin you can give her a bath and put a couple drops of olive oil in the water. If it's mites, watch her ears for raggedy-ness.

Ok thanks! I'll check tonight. But what do you mean by "Raggedy-ness"? And if it's mites, should I take her to the vet?

You could also check for orange crust around the base of the quills. That's a clear indicator of mites. Also, you could try running a dark cloth along your hedgie's back, and if there are any tiny moving white bugs, it's definitely mites.

If the itching doesn't get better after the olive oil (or oatmeal) bath, and the itching gets worse/more frantic, I would definitely take her to vet. Just make sure that your vet treats mites with Revolution, and not Ivermectin. Good luck

Almost every bath I give her it's a oatmeal bath. But I will for sure check for mites. Thanks for your advice!
