Exclamation things to do when your hedgies (and cat) have mites

First off... My vet basically strong armed me into getting oral ivermectin for my two hedgehogs even though I voiced a concern...He prescribed 5 doses of .01 ivermec orally one dose every 10 days....I gave one dose but am now scared to try and give any of the others because of so many stories I have read. the dosage is that he says because I can see it in the syringes he gave us to give them the dose...What should I do? never give the second dose and when I go back in for their 2 week checkup tell him I want to switch to revolution? Or go ahead with his dosage???

One of my hedgies ended up with a skin infection so she is also on an antibiotic for 3 weeks twice a day :/ She seems to be getting better and her poops other than being a little more greenish because of the meds are more healthy and solid than ever since the day we brought them home...her sister is still having tummy troubles though

Also...what do I need to be doing while the hedgehogs are medicated...should I change their fleece everyday? twice a week? once a week? I clean wheels everyday change fleece once a week as of now. Also something that is complicating things for me is the fact that its my cat that gave them to them...so do I need to clean everything in my house now??? Im a first time hedgie owner and I just want to do what's best for my babies!

Honestly, it's up to you. Personally, I would call the vet up & go back in sooner to get some Revolution to switch to. I've heard enough about Ivermectin that I never want to risk any form of it with hedgehogs.

I would change the fleece every day to be on the safe side - that's what I did when Lily had mites. It was a pain, but considering how the whole ordeal seemed to take forever as it is, it was worth it to make sure the mites didn't come back. I changed the fleece & wiped the whole cage down with 50/50 vinegar/water & then diluted chlorhexidine solution. The vinegar/water (or whatever you use to clean the cage now) should be just fine alone, I just liked the chlorhexidine as well.

With the cat...I'm honestly not sure, I've not encountered or heard of a situation like this that I can think of. My best guess would be to vacuum the whole house, then continue to vacuum the room they're in daily & make sure kitty's being treated as well. If you can, it may be a good idea to try and keep the cat out of their room for now? Though that may be overkill.

The main thing I know of that mites can hang around in is wood - so if you have a lot of wood furniture or anything like that in the house, that may complicate things. If you have anything wood in the hedgie cage, make sure you take that out & get rid of it. Wood that has a coating of something on it should be fine though, I think.

Thanks for the help! the cat and the hedgies started treatment at the same time. No wood in their cage but there is a little cardboard...is that as bad as wood? I just picture all of these litle pests running around my house and its making me itchy!!!

I'm not sure if they can burrow & hide in the cardboard like they can wood...but to be safe, I'd throw it out & stick with only things that can be cleaned easily.
