Unhappy Believe My Hedgie Has Mites

Hi Everyone,

My hedgie, Cannoli, has been very irritated and lethargic this week. I noticed this white, flakey, enflamed patch above his tail the other day. I took him to the vet yesterday who diagnosed him as having dry skin and gave me some medicated shampoo and fish oil.

However, he has stopped eating and drinking since then, and has only been sleeping and is still very irritable which he usually isn't. The patch hasn't gotten any better. I feel as if he has mites after reading the posts in this forum. Is it to soon to tell, or should I bring him back to the vet tomorrow to inspect for mites?

Mites or some kind of bacterial or fungal infection. Make them do a culture.

I think this may be more than mites, you should definitely take him back into the vet. If you can, try another vet to get a second opinion on what is really going on.

Hi Everyone - so I checked with the vet. We did the "dark cloth" test with a flashlight and it is mites. Hopefully people will see this post with pictures and know to check for that if they have similar symptoms!
