My hedgie Rumble has been recently scratching himself constantly so I had decided to check to see if he had mites and sure enough I saw little white bugs crawling on his skin. After finding an animal hospital that would take Hedgehogs, I took him as soon as I could.
The vet asked me about his living and care and I responded accordingly, and she said she would take him to get weighed. She would later return my Rumble with a bloody rump and said she had gone and injected him already and had to return in two weeks for a follow up. They also gave me some sort of pyrethrum shampoo to bath him in and clean his cage with, is it on any good? My question is if one injection of the stuff is harmful to my hedgie and what might happen if I don't go get the second because after reading more on the stuff, I'm not risking his life for it. I'm gonna get Revolution and apply it myself but since he already has one Ivermectin shot, what could possibly be a drawback? Last edited by Rumble502; 11-09-2016 at 08:41 AM. |

For what I understand, it's with the additional doses that the problem increases.
He needs revolution. You need to find a new vet because them doing things to your pet without your consent it's totally wrong and they don't seem to know much about hedgehogs. I personally would had been furious and told them what I thought about them and most likely I'd had refused to pay since I did not consent to any treatment. Also I'd write reviews online and report them to whoever regulates them in your country. |

First of all I would call the vet and explain that you're NOT happy with what they've done and explain to them how dangerous Ivermectin is for hedgehogs.
Then I would find a different, trustworthy vet because I personally would never go to a place where they treat my animals without asking or telling me first. That being said, it really depends on the dosage and how sensitive the hedgehog is. There is no way to tell, unfortunately. Some are fine after the first shot while others get sick. I would keep an close eye on him to see if his behaviour changes. Personally I'd wait with treating him with something else to see if he reacts to the Ivermectin or not first.
