Default Something I haven't seen or heard of doing

Little Penelope tonight in her play pen was pulling on a towel that was sticking in her cage from the outside and started pulling it and then like put saliva or something on her quills and I wasn't sure what she was doing so over the towel in her cage to see if she'd follow it and do it again but alas no results should I be worried she did this or was she doing this because it was new

Sounds like she liked it and was anointing ! Funny little things aren't they?

Yup, I think she was annointing too hedgehogs do that when they encounter a particular scent that they like (like a new blanket, or food). Then they form a saliva in their mouth, bend their back, then spread the saliva all over their quills. It's a weird behavior, and we're still not 100% sure why they do that. But it's nothing to worry about, it's completely normal behavior!

The first time I saw my hedgehog anoint, freaked me out. I had no idea what she was doing and it looked like she was foaming from the mouth. If you aren't expecting them to do that, it can be a little alarming the first time.
Like the others have said, it is perfectly normal and nothing to be concerned about.

I thought it had something to do with in the wild when they eat poisonous frogs and insects, they annoint they spread the poison on their quills. That's always made the most sense to me, I could be wrong :P
