I experienced all this with slade when I first got him. We probably got our hedgies in a one or two day radius, Cocoa! I know I might be a little late on the bonding/picking up thing but slade just LOVES to be handled. Maybe thats just his personality. At first I would use a blanket to pick that ball-o-death up and that worked out fine. But now, even thought the quills still hurt when i pick him up after hes in my hands, maybe half a second and hes out of his ball. If you sling a t-shirt you've worn all day or slept in over the wall of his cage or put in there and over his sleeping area/in a place where he would sleep in it, it really establishes trust. I think thats why slade always unbundles so quick. He smells me and his quills go down. I can do a full stroke on his back without his quilling up. I really do think the t shirt thing helps. Maybe give that a try! I hope everything goes well with you and cocoa and a second hello from another Texan!
