Default Litter training - eating aspen ??

hello all, i'm a new hedgie mom, and just have a question -
i decided i was going to try and litter train sadie, so i bought a litter pan & some aspen shavings. every time she comes in contact with it, she attempts to eat it! of course, i get freaked out and take it away so she won't consume any, but i was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? i've tried it with her 3 times, even with some of her poop in it & she still tried to eat it! she always self-anoints afterwards too. i'm not sure if she's just chewing on it, or actually trying to eat it, but i take it from her every time. maybe litter training just wasn't a good idea? help?!

Its better to be safe than sorry, from the sounds of it she is probably chewing on the aspen and then of course anointing, if she's never been in contact with it then its something new and interesting. If it was me personally, I would probably keep introducing it to her while under heavy supervision and see if she stops chewing on it, otherwise you might try something else. There is a pellet type litter many owners use called Yesterday's News, its recycled newspaper that's been turned into a pellet form, though some hedgehogs have been known to eat that too, but it may have less of a scent than aspen can, again, I'd introduce it to her under heavy supervision.

hmm, ok. i was originally looking for yesterdays news but couldn't find a small bag. i didn't want to buy a huge one incase she didn't take to it, but i'll keep an eye out for it & keep trying the aspen with her. it just kind of freaks me out, ha...

I would remove it completely from her cage and try something different. If she eats even a tiny little piece of it it can get stuck in her intestines, and it won't be fun for neither of you.

You can try Yesterday's News as Puffers said -- it's a very good product. Or you can use paper towels in the litter box.
