Unhappy New Bedding For My hedgehog

Hello!

Right now, i have the Carefreash bedding for my hedgie. I was wondering if I could shred up some news paper and regular paper and use that as bedding because the carefreash bedding gets stuck in her quills.

Thank you,

Dylan and Clover

newspaper has ink which has chemicals that could harm your hedgie so i'm told. I also think if she's sleeping in the stuff then paper will also get caught in her quills. I recommend switching to fleece liners. Less costly in the long run and all you gotta do is throw them in the washing machine.

where would you buy fleece liners from? how big should they be?

There's not much to fleece liners. It's just a piece of plain cotton fleece you get from a fabric store and cut down to the proper size. Measure the inside of the cage, add about an inch all around to allow for shrinkage, cut it to size, and off you go! I like to have 2 or 3 on hand so I have one in the cage and one in the wash. The only tools you need is a pair of scisors and something to measure with. Which is great because that's where my "sewing skills" end. If I can do it, anyone can (but wow, did I ever feel out of place in a fabric store!).

Lol ... One more question... How do you get hedgies to stop going under the fleece? it seems that if you have fleece liners in there you will have to re-fix it everyday

Same here.
I went to our local little quilting shop and picked out fleece based on 'fluffiness' & color. The nice store lady was very helpful and excited for me - ooohing and ahhhing over the coordinating colors I had chosen...until I mentioned it was all for a hedgehog!

She took all of the fleece out of my arms & told me, in no uncertain terms, that I was NOT going to use fleece at $34.99/yard for a hedgie! Then she helped me find stuff a little more 'appropriate'...

And every person in the store had to come over and chat with us about what it's like to live with a hedgie.

I'm not entirely sure. Norman has never attempt to go under his. He was raised on wood shavings since that's what the breeder had, but I switched him over to fleece the instant I brought him home. I have an old, worn shirt in his cage (that gets washed and replaced with another re-worn shirt every week - I have a few "Norman" shirts), so that gives him something he can burrow in. He seems to be pretty happy with it and hasn't tried to burrow under his liners, so that might be a possible solution for you.

If he's in his igloo, he occasionally digs at the liner, but it seems to be so that he can bunch it up and make a little pillow out of it.

LOL, my fabric store is 3 hours away, one way, and even so they know me by sight when I come in, and know that I'm sewing for hedgehogs...LOL. The one lady always asks me about the hedgies when I go in, even if I haven't been there for a few months.
